Lunchbox’s Artistic Director Bronwyn Steinberg spoke to Livewire Calgary’s Aryn Toombs about our upcoming 50th season.

The goal for this Lunchbox Theatre milestone was to do more Canadian plays rather than just revisiting some of the best-loved plays from the company’s history—with the exception of Jake’s Gift, said Artistic Director Bronwyn Steinberg, “I want to honour our legacy as a place where we do new Canadian plays and to do that by doing more new Canadian plays rather than doing ones that were new the first time then. So, we ended up with a mix, where Jake’s Gift is something that we’ve had at Lunchbox,” Steinberg said.

Jake’s Gift by Julia Mackey

Oct. 30 - Nov. 17, 2024

2004 & 1944. On the shores of Juno Beach, a precocious 10 year old helps a WWII veteran confront ghosts from his past.

A beloved multi-award winning Canadian play returns to Lunchbox.

While revisiting the shores of Juno Beach, Jake encounters Isabelle, a precocious 10-year-old from the local village. Isabelle’s inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long-ignored ghosts – most notably the war-time death of his eldest brother, Chester, a once promising young musician. Jake’s Gift is a multi-award winning Canadian play about a World War II veteran’s reluctant return to Normandy, France, for the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings. At its heart, this play is about the legacy of remembrance and makes personal the story behind one soldier’s grave.

Twelve Days by Joe Slabe

Dec. 3 – Dec. 21, 2024

Co-produced by Forte Musical Guild

A heartwarming new holiday musical.

1965. For Anton, studying music at McGill was his ticket off the farm. Stuck at school for the holidays, he wants to make Christmas special for Donna, the girl in the next practice room with big dreams for her musical career. Anton sets to work on making creative presents to charm Donna as they count down the twelve days to Christmas. But when his rival, Robert, invites Donna to spend Christmas with him at his family’s Toronto Mansion, Anton needs to decide how far he’s willing to go to give her the perfect gift.

Go for Gold, Audrey Pham by Camille Pavlenko

Jan. 28 - Feb. 16, 2025

A quirky comedy that could only happen in Calgary.

1988. It’s the age of Walkman’s and permed hair, and Calgary hosts the Winter Olympics. Audrey Pham represents Canada in the ultimate glam sport of Ski Ballet. Unfortunately for Audrey, the Athletes’ Village was not built large enough to accommodate everyone, and she is billeted with Birchwoman; the notorious Wicked Witch of West Kensington. Can Audrey master her pirouettes on the slopes, while navigating Birchwoman’s biting sense of humour and hoarder’s paradise of a curio shop on her once-in-a-lifetime quest for the Gold?

Please Return to Empire Video by James Odin Wade

Mar. 25 - Apr. 13, 2025

A coming-of-age comedy in a video store.

2003. VHS is out and DVDs are in, and thousands of tapes have been unloaded on a small franchise location of Empire Video in southern Alberta. Friends Cass and Owen, and their surly coworker Thomas, have to survive a shift of endless sorting, stickering and rewinding in time to get to an advanced screening of The Matrix Reloaded. In the midst of movie references and workplace shenanigans, the world of the video store begins to unspool around them, testing their friendship as never before.
